Chicago has a national reputation
for being a very walkable city, and pedestrians are an important
part of the overall traffic mix. Walking is not only good for your health, it's good for
the environment. CDOT--working in conjunction with other city
departments, elected officials and community groups--has taken myriad
steps to ensure a safe and efficient pedestrian environment. Among
those efforts:
Building pedestrian facilities
The city continues to build infrastructure for pedestrians-from walking
paths to new pedestrian bridges to improved sidewalks.
Making intersections safer
Traffic engineers study intersections to look for ways to make improvements,
such as new crosswalk markings, walk signal timing changes and pedestrian
countdown signals.
Encouraging walking
Through events and activities, as well as programs like Safe
Routes to School, the city encourages residents and visitors to walk.
